Reed Patton- who has a history of long-time success in business. Maybe he was looking out for us (he’s Sam’s step-dad)- thinking about all our children and worrying about the future- knowing that we are free birds that enjoy the moments of life we live today … I guess he’s not only a great businessman, but a typical worrisome Dad, too. He could have told us to invest in typewriters and we would have taken his word for it. So we rolled with it. We laughed after we signed our SBA loan about realized how much debt we were now in. But we never reconsidered. A few years later, yet again he’s proved himself on another smart investment. Thank’s for your guidance Reeder!!

In 2012, Sam retired from the Marine Corps with a Purple Heart from injuries sustained during combat in Marjah, Afganistan. In 2013, we moved out to San Diego and Sam was working as a commercial diver, until he injured his knee and was unable to work. We were offered an opportunity to invest with Reed Patton, and eventually we stumbled upon ALS, when there were only a handful of franchises in Texas and Arizona. We decided we wanted to get our hands dirty and open our own studio instead of partner with Reed on the NY/NJ region. As a machine gunner/diver and ER nurse/mama of 4 team we came in as franchisees/managers with zero experience. Sam had never even had a formal interview in his life, but we knew that having a good culture in our studio was at the top of our priority list, and we hoped success would follow. Nowadays, our team reminisces and laughs about their first impressions of our atypical interview. “What did I just sign up for?!” some of them reluctantly thought after agreeing to come work with us. Seven months later, we have a tight knit team, happy clients, lots of laugh, and successes all around- unofficial regional stylists and consultants who support our region, and a top-performing studio that is a pleasure to work in!

Each of the five recipients receives a $2,250 tuition scholarship toward her education at an accredited aesthetics school.  Winners were announced during the 2018 Amazing Lash Studio National Franchisee ‘The Power of You’ Conference that took place in Scottsdale, Ariz. September 27-30.

Daniela Beckett, Upper Arlington, Ohio, Aveda Institute-Columbus

Growing up in Columbia, Daniela was immersed in a culture that celebrated beauty. “Going to the beauty carnival with my mom every year, beauty became part of who I am as a person,” she says in her application video. Daniela believes that education is the fuel that will ignite her passion for beauty into a career. “Going to school is the first step in my journey to help empower men and women to be the very best version of themselves,” Daniela says.

 

Sierra Childs, Round Rock, Texas, Aveda Institute-Austin 

As an artist, Sierra views beauty as a form of self-expression. Her application essay and accompanying story board described the hardships she’s overcome in life, the resilience these challenges have helped her form, and the relationships that have strengthened her. “These elements of art, family, love, and strength have inspired me, and I am eager to pass these elements on to the people I work with as a student and a beauty professional,” Sierra says.

 

Marceyanna Marshall, Inkster, Mich., David Pressley School of Cosmetology

In her application video, Marceyanna says makeup artists uncover each person’s unique confidence and beauty. “We are all perfect, just as we are; and makeup artists enhance each individual’s unique beauty,” she says. Marceyanna celebrates the role makeup artists play in helping clients celebrate special moments. “For an hour, I get to be someone’s best friend as I help them prepare for a concert, date night, wedding or any special moment.”

 

Cassandra Schulz, Austin, Texas, Aveda Institute-Austin

A former banker, Cassandra’s essay and storyboard describes how beauty has evolved from a passion to a purpose to a career path. “I want to use my struggles with acne to help others build confidence,” she says. “Beauty is my passion, my purpose and now my career!” Cassandra views a successful life as a life driven by balance and incorporating health, fitness, nature and a spirit of persevering – including finding one’s ideal career path.

 

Imani Simon, Lexington, Ky., Summit Salon Academy

Imani drew inspiration for her application storyboard and essay from Maya Angelou’s poem “Phenomenal Woman.” “For a woman of color, this industry wasn’t always as inclusive as it is now,” she says. “So, I’ve made it my mission to help people to love the skin they’re in.” The future esthetician wants to use her education not only to enhance clients’ features but to educate them about proper skincare.

Heather Elrod, CEO of Amazing Lash Studio, says the company is honored to help support the next generation of estheticians with scholarship programs. “The demand for esthetics professionals continues to grow and we are excited to help equip and empower future estheticians to take advantage of this rewarding career path,” she said.

Beauty Changes Lives Foundation President Lynelle Lynch said the generosity of Amazing Lash is helping not only students but spas and salons. “According to data from the International Spa Association, there are more than 30,000 jobs in the professional spa industry,” Lynch said. “By funding this scholarship, Amazing Lash is shining the spotlight on a very fulfilling career path and helping employers attract talent with the skills and knowledge necessary for long-term success,” Lynch said.

Name: Margie and Rex Bahm…pronounced like “bomb.” We can’t say it very loud at the airport.

Age: 55 (Margie) and 54 (Rex); our birthdays are only 1-day apart, June 3 (Rex) and June 4 (Margie). Rex is is first, so he always stealing the birthday thunder.

Title: Margie is the co-owner/operator of our Amazing Lash Studio in Peoria. Rex has been employed at Right Toyota, in Scottsdale, for the last 14 years and is currently the used car director. Margie: I am very proud of all his success at the dealership. He is known as the guy that wears the bow ties…not just any bow ties but feathered Brackish Bowties. After a 10-hour day at work, Rex often will come to the studio to help me close.

Married/Single: Married on November 5 six years ago…best years of our life! We met in our late 40’s (second marriage for both) and married in Bora Bora. We stayed 10 wonderful days in an over-the-water hut, which was a dream honeymoon.

Kids: Margie: One son, Jason, who is age 36 and lives in AZ, and a 16-month-old grandson. Rex: One son, Austin, age 28 who lives in AZ, and one daughter, Jennifer, age 32 that lives in Hawaii and seven grandchildren.

City you live in: We live in Peoria, AZ, only five minutes from the studio. Margie: I love my commute particularly considering I had to fly to Nashville and other cities throughout my 20-year career in the pet industry.

When Heather Elrod joined Amazing Lash Studio two-and-a-half years ago, charged with building the semi-permanent eyelash extension franchise and creating an exit for the founders, the Scottsdale, Arizona-based brand had 75 units open. Now, it has 200 open, and Elrod’s concerted work since last November has attracted a new buyer, WellBiz Brands backed by KSL Capital Partners.

Founders Edward and Jessica Le are immigrants from Vietnam with a great story, and their hard work to start the brand has now paid off. WellBiz bought them completely out, which was their choice, Elrod said. “I joined the company to assist them in growing and positioning the company for sale,” Elrod said about the founders. “They are really just a great American success story.”

Amazing Lash grew systemwide sales 85 percent last year, according to the Franchise Times Top 200+, rocketing up 85 spots to No. 328 in our annual ranking of 500 franchise brands that publishes this Friday.

“We have added additional lash services; we’ve added retail; we’ve added a lot of business intelligence to support the franchisees,” Elrod said about reasons for the growth. “Moreover, we have such a strong franchise base, just really fantastic individuals in this network. I am so proud of their accomplishments and the relationships I’ve had with them.”

Joe Luongo is executive chairman of WellBiz Brands, based in Englewood, Colorado, and also owner of Elements Massage, Fitness Together and FIT36. “This is a long process, when you look at evaluating the brand” to acquire, said Luongo, formerly of Massage Envy. “One of the pieces is, is the foundation right, and Heather has done an amazing job with growing the brand smartly. When you talk about first mover advantage, and there’s so much runway for so much more.”

Luongo, too, praised the company’s founders. “Jessica and Edward, it’s an amazing success story. Gosh, I hope they write a book, I really do.” Jessica developed a proprietary process to apply semi-permanent lashes. “She set the foundation, and our job is to create the legacy effectively. We owe her that,” he said.

Amazing Lash is WellBiz’s first beauty brand, but Luongo said the idea will be to grow it like its other brands. “We like to stay as focused as we can on the core competencies on each of our brands. It’s not about adding a million different products overnight. When you add too many products, in whatever it is, you’re going to complicate it and it gets challenging for franchisees to execute it across the country.”

Elrod will remain CEO of Amazing Lash. She said she talked to private equity firm KSL Capital first, starting back in November when the company announced it was seeking an investor, and that led to WellBiz because KSL Capital owns WellBiz. “When I first spoke with KSL, what they said was they like companies that do one thing very well. Our vision is owning everything around the eyes,” she said.

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – (BUSINESS WIRE) – September 11, 2018 – Amazing Lash Studio, the nation’s largest and fastest growing eyelash extension franchise brand, announced today the opening of its 200th studio in East Brunswick, New Jersey. The concept began franchising in 2013 and, to date, has 200 open studios in 33 states and 714 regional developer units awarded. How does an Army veteran go from selling pantyhose from the basement of his home in Wisconsin to becoming a franchise savant? It is a long and crazy road that Amazing Lash Studio regional developer and franchisee Dennis Conklin has been on, and he wouldn’t change it for the world.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, after high school Dennis went into the Army and did his tour of duty in Germany. While stationed there he met and married his wife, Rosemarie. They had three kids, Gabi, Dennis Jr. and Danielle. Upon leaving the Army and with a family to support, Dennis began looking for sales opportunities and started Sheer Delight, a pantyhose company. “Here I am, this macho military man peddling pantyhose – but could I sell,” said Dennis. It started out from the basement of his home in Greenfield, Wisconsin, and later moved to a warehouse, which Rosemarie oversaw as the business grew – and grew. “Pantyhose were a staple to women in the ’70s, but as style and fashion changed, pantyhose were not an everyday item for women,” said Dennis. Always looking for opportunities and looking to get out of the cold, Dennis moved his family to Arizona and next ventured into the skin care business with Forever Young products, selling massage creams and lotions. For the next 15 years he had much success in building his business until franchise fate intervened.

In 2005, Rosemarie came home after a massage at Massage Envy and told Dennis about the new and first-to-market member-based concept. Intrigued, he began his due diligence and looked to sell his Forever Living products in the clinics. After an initial meeting at Massage Envy corporate, his creams and lotions weren’t in the clinics, but his confidence in the brand was. He bought regional developer and franchisee rights to San Diego without ever stepping foot into a Massage Envy. “This was such a unique business model, and I knew I wanted to be part of it from the start.” As the business grew at epic speed, in 2007 Dennis reached out to his youngest daughter, Dani, to come on board. “I was 20 years in the corporate world and was currently the district manager for Young’s Columbia in Seattle when I got the call from my dad to operate the clinic in Carlsbad,” said Dani. “I was excited about the brand and working with my father.” After successfully building the Massage Envy brand in San Diego, in 2010 the father-daughter team signed on to become the regional developers and franchisees for European Wax Center (EWC).

With the franchise market providing several solid opportunities, in 2012 Dennis signed on to become the regional developer of The Joint…the chiropractic place in San Diego and Orange County. “This was being operated by the original Massage Envy team, who I was very confident in,” said Dennis. He grew the brand until an opportunity to sell it back to the franchisor was offered, and he took it. “It remains a solid business model, but I wanted to focus on my Massage Envy clinics and our EWC growth.” In 2014, they sold their regional developer rights to the European Wax Center concept but continued to own and operate three centers. This dynamic duo found their next brand-building opportunity, Amazing Lash Studio. “My dad asked me to fly to Houston to meet with Edward Le, co-founder and CEO of Amazing Lash Studio, and as I had been hooked on lash extensions since 2006, I was really excited about the concept,” says Dani. “It was a fabulous meeting, and I returned to San Diego, shared my excitement with my dad and we were all in. It has been nothing but amazing since the get-go.” Their efforts have not gone unnoticed in any of the four brands with accolades including 2 Million Dollar Club and strongest sales closing at Massage Envy and Brand Ambassador at Amazing Lash Studio They sold their regional developer rights to Massage Envy last year. “It was time to focus and grow our new concepts, as it really takes 150% in the beginning,” says Dennis. What does this franchise duo see in their future? “My dad most likely will retire in three years when he turns 80 and go full-time into driving my mom crazy,” says Dani with a grin. “I will continue to build the businesses I have and work with all these great franchisees while looking for unique brands, and of course have fun doing it!”
